Investment management is a life-long passion for Paul. After a long and successful career as a portfolio manager Paul established Devon Funds Management after acquiring Goldman Sachs JBW Asset Management (NZ) in March 2010.  Devon has now grown to have one of the largest and most experienced Australasian equity teams in New Zealand, focused on constructing concentrated portfolios of handpicked securities for local clients.

As an investment industry stalwart his strong views on corporate governance have been widely reported in the media.  Similarly he firmly believes that those in the investment industry must use their influence to ensure shareholders’ best interests are served by listed companies.

Over his 22 year career in investment management, Paul has held a number of senior positions including Portfolio Manager and co-founder of Brook Asset Management (with specific responsibility for the top performing Alpha Fund), Portfolio Manager at Bankers Trust New Zealand (best performing fund 1994 – 1998) and Junior Portfolio Manager at Lombard Odier in London.

Slade Robertson has a long and successful career in investment management.  With over 19 years experience in both the New Zealand and Australian investment industry, Slade’s track record is proof of his determination to pursue the best investment opportunities for his clients.

Prior to joining Devon Slade managed the Alpha Fund and Tasman Fund at Brook Funds Management with impressive results.

Slade draws on his extensive investment management experience from his time as Head of Equities at BT Investment Management in New Zealand and portfolio management role at Challenger International (NZ).

At Devon Slade’s expertise and insight is applied to stock selection and portfolio construction for the Devon Alpha Fund and the Devon Trans-Tasman Fund.  His significant analytical skills also are keenly applied to assessing all potential investments in the financial and material sectors.

Chris Gaskin is a respected name in the investment management industry in New Zealand with over 17 years’ experience in financial markets.  Chris is focused on securing the best outcomes for his clients and at Devon, Chris is the Portfolio Manager responsible for stock selection and portfolio construction for clients’ Australasian Equity Core portfolios. This is a role which Chris performed at Brook asset Management, in addition to senior analytical responsibilities prior to joining Devon.

Devon’s emphasis on research is well served by Chris’ solid background in company analysis and Chris also has experience working for Credit Suisse First Boston, and in KPMG’s Corporate Finance division.   Chris has an enviable set of analytical skills which he applies to Devon’s clients interests in healthcare,  telecoms, utilities and industrial sectors.

Tama Willis, BBS

In the quest for the best talent , Devon Funds Management secured the skills of Tama Willis in mid 2012.  A 14-year veteran of international investment markets, Tama returned to New Zealand to join Devon’s investment team taking responsibility for the resources and industrial sectors as well as stock selection and portfolio construction for Devon’s Australian Fund.

Tama came to Devon from the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, one of the world’s leading sovereign wealth funds, where he was Senior Vice President Natural Resources, covering global resource stocks with a particular focus on Australia.

Mining and metals was also an area of specialty for Tama during his tenure at Fidelity Worldwide Investment in London, where he led a team of 9 analysts in the natural resources sector.   During this time, Tama was ranked No. 1 and No. 2 buy-side mining analyst in the European surveys.

Tama also draws on the significant experience he gained with a number of major investment banks in London.  His nine years at Deutsche Bank as Director of European Metal and Mining Research, and his analytical role at UBS Warburg have stood him in good stead.

Our clients are the reason we’re in business.  While the Devon team is committed across the board to achieving the very best investment outcomes for our clients, it is Mel Firmin, our head of the client servicing team, who has the ultimate responsibility for ensuring we not only meet our clients’ needs but, where possible, exceed them.

Mel has been engaged in client service roles for much of the 25 years he has spent in the New Zealand investment industry.  As a director and shareholder of Devon, Mel is dedicated to forging long-term relationships with all our clients.

In addition to his client service focus, Mel demonstrates particular strengths in the areas of compliance, operations management and in overseeing Devon’s various outsourcing partners.

Mel has a long association with Paul Glass, having worked together first at Arcus Investment Management, and then at Brook Asset Management alongside Slade Robertson and Chris Gaskin, where he headed up client services, compliance and operations for eight years.

Nick has been with Devon Funds Management since early in 2010 and holds responsibility for the analysis of consumer staples, IT, consumer discretionary and property sectors. Nick s also responsible for the quantitative screening process at Devon.

Nick’s strengths as an investment analyst were roundly demonstrated during his tenure at New Zealand Funds Management, where he was responsible for the portfolio construction and trading on the Dividend Yield Fund, a $90m portfolio consisting of New Zealand and Australian stocks.

Nick’s  advantage lies in his broad understanding of trans-Tasman investment opportunities, having covered a wide range of stocks and sectors during his eight years in the industry.

Niall Hartigan, BBS

Niall brings a rich set of skills to Devon Funds Management, acquired during his time studying and working in both North America and Ireland.

Niall joined Goldman Sachs JBWere Asset Management shortly before it became Devon Funds Management.  As one of the founding employees of Devon, Niall joined at an exciting time and, in the ensuing years, has played an important role in the subsequent growth of the Devon business, particularly in the operations area.

Niall has a Bachelor of Business Studies degree with Honours in Accounting and Finance from the University of Limerick in Ireland.  While studying, Niall was invited to undertake an internship at Deutsche Bank in New York.

He holds responsibility for all of Devon’s compliance, operations, position keeping and settlements functions.

Johann Liew, BCOM

Johann joined Devon in late 2011.  In a very short space of time, Johann’s broad ranging financial services skills have proven to be an invaluable asset to the operations and wider investment team.

Johann has demonstrated his talents in a couple of different roles during the early years of his career in the investment industry.  While at AMA Capital Management, a boutique wealth manager, Johann worked as a Portfolio Administrator, executing trades, liaising with fund managers, forecasting cash flows and completing scenario analysis among other duties.  Prior to AMA, Johann held a Para-Planner role with another boutique provider, Cleary Wealth Management.

At Devon, Johann is responsible for the daily operations including position keeping, trade processing, monitoring of mandates and the monthly reporting function.

Johann holds a combined Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Finance from the University of South Australia, and the University of Auckland.
